Digital Prototype of Concept 3.
Chair Design
Individual Project
2023
For this project, I wanted to design a stool that can be used within small studio spaces which can also aid in providing more space for artists and designers.
I wanted to create a stool that is comfortable and compact but also has space that artists/designers can use. This possibly being a small side table that lifts out from the chair to provide more room for utensils, such as paint brushes, pencils, laptop, water, etc. The design needs to have a minimalistic aesthetic to fit every studio space.
For the full in-depth project process, research and development I have provided the project’s PDF here.
After exploring what type of context the chair would sit within, I developed some initial concepts.
After sketches I moved onto prototypes. For this initial round of prototypes I used paper, tape and glue to create low fidelity prototypes.
After making the paper prototypes, I moved onto creating digital prototypes to be made into 3D printed versions.
After creating these 3D printed prototypes I went in a different direction for the chair— Concept 3, a design the integrated the aspects of concept 1 and 2 that worked well. I proceeded to digital and 3D prototyping instead of additional low fidelity paper prototypes.

After a couple of prototypes I moved onto making the final high fidelity chair design. If this chair were to go into manufacturing it would most likely be made out of acrylic or wood; however, for this project I only created a 3D printed prototype of the final to show how the design would function.
Reflection
I created a stool that can be used within small studio spaces which can also aid in providing more space for artists and designers.
The side compartment can be used to hold books while the desk is attached and when the desk is not needed can easily be stored away within the side compartment. The desk is the main aspect of this stool that can provide more space. The desk can hold small objects such as paint brushes, pens, books, water, etc.
This design would be offered in a variety of acrylic colours to appeal to all sorts of studio spaces and for a more luxurious aesthetic could be offered in a warm wood, such as Jarrah or Mahogany. The sleek and minimalistic design can fit any studio space and would be a stable among designers and artists alike.
Another application for this stool could be within classrooms, specifically Design/Art oriented classrooms as they can provide students with more space when tables and extra stools are limited.
